Valdivia is considered one of the most beautiful cities in Chile .  It was founded in I 552, re-founded in 1645 and strongly fortified.  The city is sometimes described as La Perla de-Sur (The Pearl of the South).

In 1960, Valdivia was near the epicenter of a 9. 5 earthquake, termed the strongest earthquake in the World. The resulting tsunamis were felt across the Pacific Ocean . The river courses changed and where the earth sank, the resulting flooding and created an aquatic area now maintained as the wetlands of the Santuario de la Naturaleza Carlos Anwandter.

Puerto Montt

Puerto Montt is most noted for being the starting point to the southern lake area and Chilean Patagonia.  The oldest building in Puerto Montt is the cathedral on the Plaza de Armas. Built In 1856, it is constructed entirely of redwood.  It is little wonder that the Mapuche Indians fought the Incas and the Spanish during the 15th and I6th centuries. Of particular interest is the chain of National Parks that extends along the Argentine borders with habitats ranging from forest to volcanic plateaus. Chile ’s National Park, Vicente Perez Rosales is also one of its most inspirational of South America .
