Iceland

We went just to see the Aurora Borealis.  Bucket list item.

We had no idea what else might be there., other than our wonderful, warm, smart, humorous traveling companion Jane.   Yep, the Jane that sat up with me drinking wild Turkey well into the night...

We were in for a surprise!  We had no prior knowledge of Iceland, no idea of what we might find, other than snow, what sights we might see and what type of food we might encounter.  Everything might be new, and it was - wonderfully new!

The Journal

The only bad thing that happened was loss our one of two books making up out Journal.   The first Journal was given to Jackie by her wonderful mother, Sara, when we left to drive to Alaska from Maryland.  She assured us the Journal would be the only thing of value when returned - not pictures, nor post cards, not souvenirs, not even fading memories.  Again, she was absolutely correct.  Consequently Jackie has religiously kept a Journal on every trip we've taken.

The Error -  The mistake we made was to keep filling the Journal, trip after trip, never thinking that we might lose it.  After filling the first Journal, Jackie started a second.  That was perhaps 1/2 full when lost.  I do not know how many trips, for al intents and purposes, just for all practical purposes, just disappeared.

Now - we'll do one or both of two things: 1st we'll keep each trip in a separate Journal.  The worst that could happen is loss during the trip we were currently enjoying and we can probably rebuild it.  2nd, I have a Surface.  A really durable, compact, and pretty light - given its usefulness - to keep a Journal.  That way I can download, if necessary, every night, as I do with our pictures, and cut opportunity or loss to a minimum.

Why do I capitalize the ""J" in Journal?   Because it is that damn important.  If you do not keep a Journal, shame on you - it is the best investment in time you can make while on a trip.
